Walking through the solution

Hey group,
A bit of shameless back patting about to happen...

3 years ago I chose to take a stand and be responsible for creating a strong solution to climate change that anyone could follow. Also to demystify the web of green options each person has in front of them.

It became a software application that took every known source on going green I could find and summarize it into one place. During this research I also did the math needed, so every action has a specific savings in $ and CO2.
Knowing that the average person does not have the same amount of time to educate themselves...I created an online assessment that would give the program clarity into each persons unique options and give a day by day coaching plan on how to green their lifestyle.
No matter where you are starting from...skinny or huge footprint.
I have just finished and launched yesterday.
I am going to market the complete program for $29 and give $15 of that to a non-profit also needing money to further their own Global Warming solutions. It took some time to build those partnerships but they are good and solid programs.
Here is a bit more information and the URL
Please support this effort and spread it out to your connections( if you find it useful)
This has been a labor of love and I hope you find it useful.

PS. I have a certain number of "free" memberships I can give if you need it just email me through the website or here on Tribe.
PPS . WE DO NOT SELL ANY PRODUCTS

Going Green Today is an in-depth online program that looks at your lifestyle and creates simple green living options just for you. We give you an easy-to-follow action plan that walks you through reducing your carbon footprint by at least 35% and helping you to save $2000 this year.
visit us at

Thoughts about Arconsanti & the Auroville Earth Institute ?

Howdy folks! I'm very interested in doing a 3 - 6 month (or longer!) earth-based building apprenticeship / internship in the near future and would love some advice. Obviously the lower the cost the better, as I'm on a small budget.

I've been thinking about the following two earth-based building schools, partly because I've heard good things about both, and partly because I'm intrigued about the unique intentional community settings ... does anybody have direct experience with either of these projects? Or does anybody have recommendations about other programs that I may want to look into?

Arcosanti < www.arcosanti.org/ >

Auroville Earth Institute < www.earth-auroville.com/ >

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and collective wisdom about all of this!

I'm setting off on a cross country adventure to make a documentary on the issues most of the media ignores... sustainability, alternative energy, intentional communities, social and grassroots movements... and I am searching for stories that need to be told, businesses that should be supported and information that should be shared.

I'll be passing through at least thirty states in at least two months of travel. I have a general route but open to detours as they present themselves.

Please drop me a line!
Blessings!

Suggestion for a mini-hydro electric generator built from reclaimed materials?

Scale: large enough to produce 5 watts.

Magnets: yeah, I'll be buying them new.

Bearings: what can I use, that is mechanically efficient, and corrosion resistant? What kind of junked device can I source 'em from?

Turbine: what is the most functional part, or even re-fabricated form, that I can use?

It's for a creek driven LED chandaleer, for a kitchen at a site that is used for gatherings that ideally have a low environmental impact. If it can be built using primarily reclaimed materials, it will be an incredible reference point for group conciousness processing of dealing with larger scale ecological issues.

Any thoughts?

am i the only one that sees it? probly, cuz no one would expect it, thats why its a huge part of it, cuz people would refuse to see it so they get away with it. i mean, what im talking about is, here we've got BEAUTIFUL houses that you can build for practically nothing, aside from the cost of land. yet no one knows about it, the damn groups that are promoting it charge outrageous sums to learn about it ie groups like Yestermorrow in Vermont, if people really wanted to change the world, theyd do it through natural building, it brings communitys together, its free, its fun, its mind bogglingly easy to do, some people specialize in making it seem harder than it is...but thats something else, or is it? see, why would the gov not want ridiculously cheap housing? think of how much money banks make off ridiculously expensive homes...add on profit from interest, times it by millions of families...its all about the money, and its deeper than that too, if people start joining together and working as community, helping each other eat, sleep, live, have fun, well then people will see that all they need is eachother, that they dont need stop and shop or wal marts, or even government, that all we need is eachotehr, nature, and an understanding of equilibrium. government doesnt want that...they want happy little slaves who dont know what they are, this is a theory i could never prove it, factually except through logic, (1+1=2) i understand but its important to remain ever suspicious, these guys and girls have no mercy, no idea between right/wrong, now think for yourself.

Hi Tribe,
I have been asked to help produce a 9 day natural building/permaculture event on a new piece of land just south of the Baja border.
I am looking for feedback on all aspects including value, interest and curriculum.
please respond to scottankenypdx@gmail.com
Here are the details...

Oct 27 – Nov 4

Imagine a revolutionary oasis built with your very own hands
as you exercise in natural building and whole system design principles.

Imagine a community of passionate people learning what it means to be human beings,
immersed in an environment of self-expression, of listening, and of appreciation,
while they build beautifully and sustainably.

Introducing GiraSol (Sunflower), a new permaculture settlement breaking ground in November 2007. We invite you to be a part of this amazing experience by participating in a nine-day course designed to bring you competency in Permaculture and Earthen Building Methods.

Imagine yourself as part of that community…Living. Building. Playing.

This nine-day intensive design/build studio will combine natural building techniques (cobb, adobe, stone, straw/clay, passive/active heating systems) with presentations, discussions, exercises, and fun field trips.

GiraSol’s ground-breaking workshop will provide training in regenerative village design, natural construction and permaculture theory while establishing the GiraSol information center through hands-on work. The design will integrate a century-old adobe structure into a whimsical new building, seemingly sprung from the canvas of a Maxfield Parrish painting.

Led by mOceaN (Mark Lakeman), Lydia Doleman and Martin Shulke of Portland’s City Repair Project, the GiraSol Intensive will take place from 10/27/07 to 11/04/07. We will be camping as a group in the beautiful Baja desert, and all meals will be provided.

Basics

Location: GiraSol is a 200-acre parcel situated in Valle de las Palmas (Valley of the Palms), about 20 miles south of the U.S./Mexico Border and 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean between the major cities of Tijuana, Ensenada & Tecate. This new Center is on a vast tract of beautiful land in the valley, along a road from Ensenada to Tecate which is currently under construction. This road will bring unprecedented real estate development to this relatively undisturbed agrarian area. GiraSol strives to be a jewel in the Baja landscape by providing an example of sustainable community design.

Course Description: You will receive training AND become competent in the following areas:

1. regenerative village design and earthen building methods
2. biomass accumulation and use, plastering
3. roof framing
4. integrated landscaping
5. water catchment, re-use, and finishing methods.

Construction will be accompanied by discussions of the ecological features and benefits of each building phase. Through two field trips we will explore the local community by travelling to a wildlife preserve and taking part in Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

I have been posting Renewable energy jobs in my forum.
I have a question that you guys can help me with.
Would you search for a job primarily for location or Wage rate.
Coming from England everything is rather close so i was wondering in bigger countries if location was the biggest factor.

Adorable, affordable SMALL houses

I just wanted to pass on a couple of links that show small, affordable, "transportable" houses. Jay Shafer's designs are really well thought out. As extremely small as the houses seem, they actually feel bright and spacious inside. I have been inside several now. The first link is to the company website and the second link is a gallery of interior shots of a Tumbleweed house. Just goes to show, small spaces can be kind of swanky. BTW, I dont' work for, nor am I affiliated with the company, I just find the small living concept extremely appealing from my anti-consumer standpoint and green sensibilities. There's another link on my page that I haven't copied here to a much larger modular home designed to be completely off the grid. Cheers.

Seeds for peace in the middle wast?

Hay all!
I've tried to post a this before, but for some reason, it didn't registrar and folks couldn't read what I had written. So, I'm going to attempt to write it out again and hopefully this time, we'll have more responses,

Ok, so...a little info and background. I'm in Israel, and working on a project out here to grow herbs for the community. Also, wanting very much to have a program available for kids and their parents to learn about plants and how they communicate with us on all levels. It's really something that isn't being done here and I would like to bring this opportunity to light. I need some help. That's way i'm writing this request. We have a few green houses, so climate is not an issue. We need seeds! All different kinds, but organic. Herbs and winter vegetables.

The list for herbs:Elder flowers ,Yarrow ,Sage ,Rose hips ,Echinacea,Mullein,Astragalus,
Poke Root,Elecampane ,Thyme.

We are asking for 30 seeds each be sent to Israel.
We are asking for donations, since this project can really use all the help it can get and we really don't have the funds to get these seeds. Also, we request that the seeds are from your own garden and collected by you. It's a beautifal thing to know that the seeds that we are receiving are from people who cared for these plants and havested the seeds themselves. There is a story there and it makes it interesting to explain where these seeds came from and who cared for them. We like telling it this way.

Our request for organic Veggie seeds:
Celery ,Chinese leaves ,Dark greens ,Leeks ,Mushrooms, Squashes ,Winter roots ,Winter salads.

If it's not too much trouble to send the seeds with labels so we know what is what.

If you have any questions please feel to send me a message.
Thanks so much for helping us with this project. I mean a lot to us and the many people who's lives will be changed by your seeds.

If you are interested, please let me know and I can give out the address of where to send the seeds.

~peace~

Hi folks,

I would like to let you know that we are setting up a website for sustainable communities – or better for sustainable projects that combine social and environmental topics.

At the moment the site is a simple blog with some first project profiles. The long term vision is to create a web-based platform for project developers and interested people from different places around the world to exchange ideas, concepts and to present individual projects to the public. This is a long-term project and luckily I’m getting support on this from all different parts of the world.

We are now trying to get the resources together and we are therefore looking for people that would like to present specific projects with pictures and small profile articles.

Would you be interested in participating?

Please email me!

Best wishes,

Open Source Patent

Earlier in the week, I released a patent under the GNU General Public License (GPL). The patent is for a solar desalination device intended for irrigation use. The patent was formerly pending with the US Patent and Trademark office (USPTO). Unfortunately some paper work was sent to the wrong address, and the patent has subsequently been reclassified as 'abandoned'. I could send the USPTO some extra money and continue the patent process, but I have no real intention of trying to make money from the idea - plus I don't have extra money lying around.

The original patent declaration is located at one of my web sites -- http://www.aceize.com/node/114. Images and an rtf file of the declaration have been attached to the post.

A little more information about the background of the patent and why I am releasing the idea via an open source license can be found here. -- http://www.aceize.com/node/116

I would like to convert my small pottery studio into one that's powered by alternative energy sources. I have a small electric kiln and an electric pottery wheel. I only share this space with one other person. Any ideas on what I would neat to outfit this space with? Anyone here done a similar thing with their studio? I live in San Diego...maybe someone here knows of a professional I could consult with?
ANyone looking for vehicles to convert to biodiesel?

I work at the Public Motors, a used car dealership/auction, on Venice and La Cienega in Los Angeles, and if anyone is looking for diesel vehicles please contact me.

These are used vehicles, so they are sold as is. Most are in great condition anyway.
We get a lot of high end and 10 year and newer vehicles so, this is a perfect opportunity for Biodiesel companies to buy in quantity, if needed.

Please pass the word and send me a message if interested.
You can also contact me at my office at 323-937-8500 ext. 0
If I am not there please leave a message with the receptionist.

Thanks

Radiant Heating for Homes in California - Truly Efficient?

I'm currently designing a home in Calistoga which is to employ green design strategies...

I've been taught that the Holy Trinity of Sustainable Building to be:
1. Grey Water
2. Solar Panels
3. Radiant heating

However when it comes to radiant heating, is it really the most efficient approach or are we being brainwashed as designers by the hype? Consider the following: In the east coast, radiant heating is a no-brainer as you typically would leave a system running for long periods of time during the cool weather seasons.

But in California, our temperature fluctuations are so drastic; it's oftentimes cold at night and hot during the day. So if we install a radiant heating system won't the homeowner be constantly turning the system off and on to the point where the system becomes inefficient from a green building perspective?

What do you think?

Call For Makers!

Dear Makers,

We are pleased to announce Bay Area Maker Faire 2007!

Organized by the staff of MAKE and CRAFT magazines, Maker Faire is a newfangled fair that brings together science, art, craft an engineering in a fun, energized, and exciting public forum. The aim is to inspire people of all ages to roll up their sleeves and become makers. This family-friendly event showcases the amazing work of all kinds of makers--anyone who is embracing DIY and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience. Last year, we had 20,000 people at Maker Faire.

Maker Faire Bay Area will take place May 19-20, 2007 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. We are also adding Maker Faire Austin for October 20-21, 2007 at the Travis County Fairgrounds. This call is primarily for Maker Faire Bay Area but you can indicate if you are interested in participating in Maker Faire Austin.

We encourage you to join the fun and propose a maker exhibit, performance or workshop. You can submit a proposal through the web using the link described below or you can come show us your work at a Maker Faire "audition" on Saturday, February 24 at TechShop in Menlo Park, CA.

http://www.makerfaire.com

Proposals: We invite proposals for Maker workbench exhibits, workshops, presentations and performances for the Maker Faire. We are interested in proposals from individuals as well as from groups such as hobbyist clubs and schools.

Maker Workbench: Our standard setup for Makers is a six-foot long workbench. You can use this workbench to display your work and/or demonstrate how you make something. Some makers don't need workbenches, typically because they have a large object or they set up outside. Please provide a short description of what you make and what you will bring to Maker Faire. Please link to photographs or videos of what you make. Let us know about any requirements you have, such as electricity, Internet, ventilation, etc.

Interactive Performance: We're seeking performances that will engage and entertain the attendees and enable them to interact in a fun way. The performances may be tied to a stage or roving through the fairgrounds as a kind of street theatre. Performances could be musical or theatrical, but they could also be a collaborative building process. For example, you might work with attendees to put something large together in an hour.

Presentation: These includes audio-visual presentations intended for showing a project (or process) that cannot be brought to the faire, or a special project that requires AV resources. These presentations are limited to 20 minutes. Please describe the topic of your presentation and what kind of media (audio/video) that you will have. As a general rule, PowerPoint presentations are not appropriate for this event unless they are unusually entertaining.

Demonstration Workshop: A demonstration workshop is a show-and-tell session on how to make something. We're looking for makers who can demonstrate (and teach) particular skills, techniques or processes. You should start off by explaining your materials and tools and then step-through a build process, sharing your knowledge and interacting with the audience. Sessions should be under 30 minutes in length and may be repeated on the program. Please describe the subject of your workshop and what kind of setup you need for it.

Application Form: Please go to the following URL and fill it out to apply for participation as a maker. http://makerfaire.com/bayarea/2007/proposal/

All proposals will be reviewed and we will notify makers of acceptance via email by March 19, 2007.

NOTE: Presenters whose talks are accepted will receive free registration to Maker Faire. We cannot pay for travel and accommodations. (We do make exceptions under some circumstances.) If you have any questions about participating in Maker Faire, please contact Natalie Villalobos by email: info@makerfaire.com. Please let Natalie know if you plan to come to the audition at TechShop.

Key Points:

* Maker Proposal Due: Midnight (PST): Feb. 27, 2007

* Maker Faire Bay Area Audition: Saturday Feb. 24, 2007
Solar Energy, The Momentum Has Started

Solar energy is the most abundant natural resource we have, and that technology has been around for awhile, but it wasn't practical from a financial perspective until now. When we can provide the average homeowner with the ability to produce their own electricity and keep the saving instead of paying for Commercials, Stadiums and other corporate greed we are making headway.
There is a solution! I recently learned of a company that has figured out how to get Clean, Safe, Affordable Solar Power to the masses, and they do it without requiring any significant investment on the part of the homeowner. This company is helping homeowners switch to solar the easy way through a rental agreement. The customer gets a worry free solar system custom designed for 100% of their current consumption of electricity & an electric rate that is frozen at or below today's rate for up to 25 years. Let’s do something, we can be part of the solution and not be part of the problem. This program is an easy way that you can have an impact on the environment and our pocket book. Change begins you, the difference is You. http://www.jointhesolution.com/2renu

Hiring Garden Designer

Hi,
I am opening a business here in LA that offers gardens to clients. I won't say anymore.
I am looking for an “organic/chemical free garden” designer who is well established with a successful business practice currently in existence, or has semi-recently sold such a business. Must have a book/website and provide a number of gardens still in healthy operation today for inspection.
Poverty conscious, off the grid need not apply. I want someone who is comfortable with money and has the ability to interact with the occasional pushy, stingy clients in the City of Los Angeles.
This individual is nurturing and has no temper problems, not an alcoholic, dresses professional, and keeps a clean vehicle both inside and out. The ability to do full color sketches is a must.
An understanding of diverse plant life that can be sustained in Los Angeles is paramount. The ability to work with and be completely open with other design team members is a must.
The position includes some ownership in the company.
I am looking forward to meeting this person very much.

I am a graphic designer in Philadelphia, and am looking to move my career into the sustainable/ecological design field. I don't have a background in architectural, engineering or product design, however. I've been supplementing my lack of degreed accreditation and experince with reading everything I can on this topic. Any suggestions how I can retool my career path and skills without heading back to college? Or is this a pipe dream?

hey all,

this is a smaller scale issue than is generally posted here, but i'm curious to know if anyone's looked into it.

i'm considering buying a new tent. i don't camp much, so i don't keep up on tent technology, but i know that there are some very sophisticated tents out there made of all sorts of "space aged" materials.

what i'm wondering is whether or not there are companies making sophisticated tents specifically out of environmentally-friendly materials? i'm going to be doing some high desert camping, so i don't need everest-grade or anything like that. basic car-camping quality should be fine...

suggestions?

DIY Solar oven help

Howdy folx
I have been reading about the use/ building of passive solar ovens/waerheaters/sterilizers as of late and have decided to take the plunge and attempt to build one.
I am attempting to build an oven which will heat water for tea(at least, idlike to have a full blown stove for cooking food ideally.I drink ALOT of tea and it is the main use for my electric stove)
My design is the following.
I have taken a 2 gallon glass jar which serves as my tea maker and painted it flat black.I have a styrofoam cooler justlarge enough for it which ive painted black as well which has most of its lid cut out forming a window with a double layer of clear window insulation plastic covering it,letting light in.
When I place this contraption out in the sun, facing south ,starting in the mid morning(10 am or so)it still does not get hot enough to make tea by afternoon.I do not know what it is that im doing wrong, any sugestions?

Stacked Rainbarrel issues

So I have installed two stacked rainbarrel systems and they are having some issues and I was wondering if anyone out there might have some suggestions/ideas. I have taken HDPE 55 gallon barrels with two bung fittings in them and laid them on their side and connected them together at the bungs (see picture on my profile). Two things have happened. First where the barrels are sitting on the metal pallet racking they are becoming seriously indented. I will have to create more of a saddle for the barrels next time. Any suggestions?
More importantly, I have found that after a while the barrels will become full, but no water will come out of the bottom valve when opened. I thought there was an issue of an air lock, so I put air vents on the system to let air out. This did not work. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time and help. Brad.

Cape Wind myths and facts

Here is the Op Ed that appeared in today's Cape Cod Times:

Cape Wind myths and facts
Cape Cod Times
May 16, 2006

By PHILIP WARBURG and SUSAN REID

Opponents of the Cape Wind project have poured millions of dollars into a campaign aimed at substituting myth for fact regarding a project that could put Massachusetts where it should be - at the leading edge of efforts to promote clean energy.

Sadly, Sen. Edward Kennedy has become one of the more active purveyors of this anti-Cape Wind mythology, defying his own proud record as a longtime champion of sound energy policy.

Isn't it time to move beyond misleading assertion to an honest reckoning with a project that could bring Massachusetts to the forefront of our battle against climate change? Let's look at a few of the myths recently advanced by the anti-Cape Wind campaign:

Myth No. 1: Cape Wind unfairly benefits from public subsidies. Fact: Federal and state subsidies for renewable energy projects have been created for the express purpose of helping wind and other forms of clean energy compete with long-subsidized conventional fuels, such as coal and oil, as well as nuclear power. Even the anti-Cape Wind ''Alliance'' claims to support the development of renewable energy, and Senator Kennedy has a proud record of supporting federal clean energy subsidies. To support these incentives in principle and then cast stones at an entrepreneur who relies on them in planning a major pioneering renewable energy project smacks of gross hypocrisy.

Myth No. 2: Cape Wind is getting unfair access to federal land and waters. Fact: At the time Cape Wind was first proposed, there was no mechanism for an offshore wind farm developer to make payments to the federal government for occupying undersea public lands. There also was no system for leasing those lands for wind energy development on a competitive basis - though, as a practical matter, no other wind developer with an expressed interest in siting a facility in Nantucket Sound existed at the time.

The Federal Energy Policy Act of 2005 finally established requirements for royalty payments by wind energy projects in federal waters. While the Act ensured that the two pending offshore wind proposals - Cape Wind and another project off Long Island - could proceed with their review rather than start again from scratch, Cape Wind was not exempted from paying royalties equivalent to those that will be required for any other approved wind farm sited in federal waters. Cape Wind, which stands ready to pay these royalties, has no financial edge over other wind developers.

Myth No. 3: Cape Wind is not being adequately reviewed. Fact: This myth permeates anti-Cape Wind rhetoric and flies in the face of the regulatory endurance test that the project has undergone so far. For nearly five years, Cape Wind's proponents have complied with a daunting array of regulatory and permitting processes involving 17 federal, state and local agencies.

This has far exceeded the scrutiny that any coal or oil-fired power plant has been subjected to, despite the immeasurably greater environmental hazards posed by fossil fuel extraction, transportation, combustion, and waste disposal.

Given Cape Wind's scrupulous adherence to this lengthy review process, it is galling that the project's opponents, urged on by Senator Kennedy, are trying to maneuver the U.S. Congress to hand the Massachusetts governor unqualified veto power over the siting of this project in Nantucket Sound. This veto power, inserted during secret House-Senate conference committee negotiations over the pending $8.7 billion Coast Guard reauthorization bill, is an affront to sound public policy and makes a mockery of a rigorous multi-year project review.

Myth No. 4: Cape Wind will damage the economy of the Cape and Islands. Fact: There is considerable evidence from Scandinavia, California and the Pacific Northwest that the opposite is true - that wind farms attract visitors and tourists rather than repelling them. While we won't know for sure exactly what the tourism impacts of Cape Wind will be until the project is up and running, the opponents' dire warnings of a tourism slump simply aren't borne out by relevant experience elsewhere.

With gasoline prices once again topping $3 per gallon and studies pointing conclusively toward dramatic global warming trends, the shift to renewable energy is a mounting imperative. Calm, careful completion of the Cape Wind review can open the door to Massachusetts' renewable energy frontier. Stealth measures designed to jettison that review, and the Cape Wind project, should be roundly rejected by our leaders in the U.S. Congress.

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT ? Government at large is going against the will of the people ! What is the problem with these politicos?

http://www.capewind.org/

Please call and write to your Members of Congress and ask that they vote against the Coast Guard bill until the Stevens' Amendment has been removed from the Coast Guard Reauthorization bill.

http://www.capewind.org/

The Stevens amendment attempts to block the Cape Wind project for offshore Nantucket Sound in Massachusetts. The amendment would allow the Governor veto power over wind farms but would not provide the same veto power over nuclear, coal, oil or other power generation projects. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R), who has stated that he opposes the Cape Wind project, would have the ability to veto the Cape Wind project without having to cite any reason.

Permits and cob houses

My wife and I are sincerely interested in building a cob home in California. Unfortunately, I have found little information on the permit process, if one exists at all. I called the permit office in Livermore, California and the gentleman I spoke with there said that I would have to hire an architect and/or an engineer to get the permits, but admitted that he didn't know what cob was (although he was familiar with strawbale housing).

Is it necessary to get permits? What is the risk of building without permits? I'm not at all concerned about resalability, so this is not an issue.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

A passive house is a building in which a comfortable interior climate can be maintained without active heating and cooling systems (Adamson 1987 and Feist 1988). The house heats and cools itself, hence "passive".

U.S. Coastal and Offshore Wind Power DOA ?!

With the price per megawatt dropping for wind power and rising for natural gas, which generates much of our electricity, the industry is fighting back by seeking to limit competition through legislation. In yet another attempt by the established energy providers to throw roadblocks in the way of competition from renewables, Alaska senator, Don Young, has introduced an amendment that would restrict siting of off shore wind generators, an amendment designed to kill such projects as Cape Wind in Massachusetts. The amendment exempts oil and gas drilling rigs.

If America truly wants to move toward energy independence, such blatant acts of unfair market protection must be avoided. Call, fax, write, or email members of the Senate committees listed below and demand fair market competition.

As early as next week, a decision will be made in Washington DC that could kill the Cape Wind project - but there is still time for you to act to prevent this from happening.

At the urging of wind farm opponents, Congressman Don Young of Alaska is introducing an amendment that would kill Cape Wind to the Conference Committee working to finalize the Coast Guard Reauthorization Act, H.R. 889. (More details about this amendment and our response to it are provided below.)

There are four key Senators that can stop this amendment. It is extremely important to contact these Senators as soon as possible and make them realize how much public support there is for Cape Wind.

The best thing you can do is to CALL these Senators, and / or compose your own letter to FAX to them. If you can't do either of those things but could send an email instead, please do so.

What the Young Amendment would do to Cape Wind:

The Young Amendment would ban offshore wind farms within 1 1/2 nautical miles from a shipping channel or ferry route and require the Coast Guard to come up with a lengthy new rulemaking process for offshore wind farms and navigation. The amendment would require the removal of so many wind turbines that Cape Wind would not be an economically viable project, the apparent goal.

Why this is Amendment is bad public policy (see below for explanations of each of these points)

The Young Amendment is unfair to wind power, it is unneeded, it is based upon a false justification, it ignores the successful experience in Denmark, and it is contrary to the pledges of Members of Congress to reform their practices in light of recent lobbying scandals.

Amendment is Unfair to Wind Power

While this Amendment would bar wind turbines from being 1 1/2 nautical miles from shipping channels, offshore oil and gas rigs are allowed to be located as close as 500 feet to shipping channels. The requirement of the Coast Guard to develop new rules for reviewing offshore wind would be a major delay and setback to the entire wind industry. This amendment is contrary to the goals of President Bush and members of Congress who have recently been calling for the greater development of wind power in the United States.

Amendment is not needed

Under existing law, the US Coast Guard already has the authority to review Cape Wind and any other offshore wind farm proposal for sea navigation safety. The Coast Guard has been reviewing Cape Wind since 2001 and their review of Cape Wind is ongoing. The Coast Guard opposes this amendment.
Amendment backers rely upon one justification, and it is false

The justification offered for this amendment is a recent British report that gives their Coast Guard a framework for how to review offshore wind farms and sea navigation issues and issues involving radar. Of great importance - the British report only calls for a 500 meter (approximately 1/3 nautical mile) buffer zone between offshore wind turbines and shipping lanes. Beyond that distance, the report calls upon the British Coast Guard to review each project on a case-by-case basis and avoided a "one size fits all" approach. In addition, the British report was mostly concerned with proximity of offshore wind turbines to major international shipping lanes, by comparison the amount of large vessel traffic in Nantucket Sound is very small. Congressman Young is invoking this British study for justifying his Amendment, but then he ignores the British study by more than quadrupling the size of the British buffer zone and by taking authority away from the experts in the Coast Guard to make these decisions on a case by case basis.
Amendment ignores successful experience in Denmark

Denmark has had several years of successful experience of wind farms located close to major international shipping lanes with no reports of accidents or negative impacts upon safe sea navigation. Offshore Copenhagen, the Middelgrunden wind farm is just 1/4 nautical mile from a shipping channel that has 25,000 ships pass by the wind turbines each year. The Nysted offshore wind farm is 1 nautical mile from the main shipping channel that connects the Baltic Sea with the North Sea with 60,000 ships passing by each year.
Amendment goes against pledges of Congressional leaders to reform their practices

Leaders of both parties and in both chambers of Congress have pledged to reform their practices to make the lawmaking process more transparent and to reduce the influence of special interests and lobbyists. Members of the Senate and Congress truly committed to this reform cannot support this Amendment. Congressman Young is offering this Amendment to the Conference Committee working to finalize the budget for the Coast Guard. The purpose of a Conference Committee is to "resolve differences" between legislation passed in the House and Senate. In this case, NEITHER the House or Senate had considered or passed this amendment. Trying to get it inserted into the Conference Bill at the 11th hour prevents close scrutiny, the opportunity for hearings, and removes most of the members of these Coast Guard Committees from being able to vote on it.
The only backers of this Amendment are people who oppose the Cape Wind project who happen to be well-funded, well-connected, and influential. The organization that formed to oppose Cape Wind, the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, has spent one-million dollars to lobby Congress and two of their lobbying firms have field offices in Alaska.

The following organizations OPPOSE the Amendment: (partial list)

American Wind Energy Association, National Ocean Industries Association, Maritime Trades Council, Seafarers International Union, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club, Union of Concerned Scientists, Conservation Law Foundation, U.S. PIRG, Greenpeace, Woods Hole Research Center, Natural Resources Council of Maine, Environment Maine, Environmental League of Massachusetts, Friends of the Earth, American Lung Association's Maine and Massachusetts Chapters, Clean Power Now.

Does anyone know of a resource for free or low-cost building blueprints? With the increasing standardization of building codes, there seems a strong need for architect-approved, California-seismic-standard, bulletproof-approval housing designs. Not necessarily cutting-edge PV-and-graywater stuff, but something like Thoreau's cabin that would meet code.

Surely there are folks around who could churn these out by the dozen for groups such as Habitat for Humanity or use in cohousing developments and working-class infill. An affordable New-Orleans-style "shotgun" for example could help a lot of people about now, if they had the plans. Heck, entire sections of an economy could be built this way. The plans must be out there.

Where are they?

Job Title: Product Innovation Manager

Location: Cambridge, MA Kendall Square

Job Description
Looking for a driven, socially-committed, entrepreneurial individual with leadership expertise in building and mentoring highly creative teams to manage our product design process. At Design that Matters, you will help implement a new model for international development by actively engaging social enterprise, academia and industry to create products and services that meet the needs of underserved communities. Your primary responsibility will be to implement and oversee an intense, quick-turnaround, brainstorm-and-build collaborative product design process. Additional responsibilities include:

· Expanding our existing global network of academic and professional collaborators

· Translating client needs and design constraints into mission statements for collaborative teams

· Generally improving the efficiency and capabilities of DtM's collaborative design process, driving products from initial needs assessment to mature, client-approved and peer-reviewed design concepts and prototypes

For immediate consideration, send a cover letter and CV to resume@designthatmatters.org

General Qualifications

· Great brainstorm leader. You are able to create a fun, invigorating experience that take a project or a team to new levels.

· Master of quickly assembling "hot" teams for product innovation. You can take a need or opportunity and build around it the players, purposes and personalities it takes to realize a promising product prototype and beyond

· Experienced builder of innovation greenhouses. You understand the physical, cultural, virtual and other intangibles essential for fostering the growth of good ideas

· Committed to social enterprise. You have significant experience working in underserved communities-particularly the rural poor in developing countries. A minimum two-year commitment to implement a new model for international development excites you.

· You get things done! You are self-motivated, excited to push a project forward rather than be led. You are able to assume responsibility for multiple projects and deadlines from day one. You thrive in a start-up environment.

· You believe work should be fun. You build teamwork and fun into the most seemingly ordinary task.

Specific Qualifications

· Graduate degree in engineering or product design

· 3+ years of professional product design experience

· Connections to the Bay Area, particularly Stanford University, a plus.

Together we create products and services to meet the needs of underserved communities, in such areas as clean water, renewable energy and health care. Recent clients have included Malian educators seeking better teaching tools for rural classrooms and Bangladeshi doctors seeking improved medical devices for cholera treatment. Launched in 2000 at the MIT Media Lab, Design that Matters incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit in June 2003.

Has anyone seen any good documentaries that are about the environment? More specifically, have you seen documentaries that are about green design and manufacturing, the subject of this list?

Some interesting ones that I have seen are:
1. Bill McDonough & Michael Braungart "The Next Industrial Revolution" (http://thenextindustrialrevolution.org/)
2. Biomimicry
3. The Corporation
4. Exporting Harm (about E-waste in China)

I would be very interested to know if you all have any more recommendations for films of this kind, along with HOW to get a copy! I am building a collection and testing them out to see which kinds of messages, presentations, etc. people resond to the best.

Thanks!

ScrapHouse San Francisco: Volunteers needed 5/31-6/5

Howdy. As part of World Environment Day, a team of green builders, architects, engineers, city officials and artists are blitz-building a 850 sq ft exhibition home in San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza. And...we're building it entirely out of scrap and recyled materials while doing our level best to get as many LEEDS points as possible.

We'll be open to the public June 1-5 and need docents to help educate our vistors on green building and re-use issues.

Docent training will take place the last week of May. Docents will need to be available for several shifts during the first week of June.

If this sounds good to you, please send a letter of interest to rachel@scraphouse.org, and include daytime and evening contact information.

Thanks!

new heating system for old house

I'm still in the design process for retrofitting an large, old, leaky victorian with a baseboard heating system. We've decided on buying a Rinnai tankless water heater and using a 75 gal tank heater converted into a storage tank. The system will run @ 180 deg. and is designed for a later solar heating panel tye-in. We're putting in double pane windows before and/or during installation of the heating system, but the house is poorly insulated. We are using pex tubing (it is so easy to install!) for all of the runs inside of the walls and floors. This house is very slowly being remodeled towards a more earth-friendly design. The owner has a limited pool of funds but really wants to steadily improve the place. I wanted to put this post up for comments and questions in general. Does any one in this tribe have much experience with similar heating systems or retrofits?

need help keeping long foam stiff & colorfull

I'm planning a fire sculpture for Burning Man. I plan on bubbling hydrogen through a soapy solution that will (I hope) produce a lighter than air foam which will drift up into the sky where it will be ignited. Would anyone know of any additive I might use to strengthen the foam enough to keep wind currents from tearing the foam apart? I’m also looking for inexpensive ingredients that could be added to the foam that would give a nice color (hydrogen produces an orange colored flame) to the flame but is non-toxic when burned (hydrogen burns to produce just water vapor). Perhaps you don’t know the answer but know someone who might know the answer, in that case would you be so kind as to forward the question, Please and Thank You!

hey all,

if this is not a good tribe to post this question, please lemme know...

i'm on the lookout for actual personal recommendations for non-plastic disposable utensils.

i'm thinking to address certain specific situations where non-disposable utensils are not an option- ie. i'm dealing with a large group and washing is impractical/impossible.

i've tried one brand so far, and was extremely disappointed - they actually had a *taste*, and not a good one! how anyone could market them as a viable solution for food consumption is beyond me. anyway, once bitten, twice shy- anyone actually used a product that they were happy with? cost is not as much of an issue as usability (durability, taste, etc)....

Dome Home vs. Ivan the terrible

Ok well I probably havent stated this before, but I'm planning on building a nice dome home as soon as I find a nice piece of property near someplace I want to live.

I've been contemplating using concrete since it's such a sturdy material (when reinforced with rebar) and it has excellent "R" ratings when compared to traditional building materials. I found an ad for such homes in the back of popular science magazine with these folks at the monolithic dome institute. www.monolithicdome.com

Anyways after having thoroughly read their site. I ran across some information that seemed too good to be true. They claimed that some of their structures could withstand winds above gail force and even tornadoes. Ok I'm a bit of sceptic, I do realize that a dome shape is one of the strongest shapes out their, and that concrete is one of the stonger materials. But I'm a little leary when it comes to structual engineering and trusting the math....I dont know I just look back at some of the engineering disasters and I have to be a little skeptical, until I see something has been tried and true.

Well folks I now have my evidence. One of these structures located on a barrier island off the coast of florida has survived the brunt of one such event and did so with grace. While the exterior stair wells of the house did break off due to heavy tidal beatdown, the actual structure of the house is intact.

I included a couple links, including one where a MSNBC crew was in the house during the storm and they slept through it!

www.monolithicdome.com/domene...004/ivan3.html

Really if your thinking about making yourself a nice eco-friendly house that takes little to cool and heat you should consider a dome home.

New movement to co-opt corporations for change

I have a passion for life - for my life, my kids ’lives, and all of our lives …so I have to share my passion and my vision (that follows) with you …hoping that it might lead you to more hope-filled, joyful and sustainable lives.

First, for perspective, the next paragraph is the important part of world history in a single paragraph. Then, I hope to enlist you in joining the Aikido Activism Movement, a movement that can face today ’s deepest challenges with the most empowered approach to change.

THE IMPORTANT PART OF WORLD HISTORY IN A PARAGRAPH
Humanity has passed from a first great era of primarily physically-mediated conflict to one today of primarily economically-mediated conflict (see for example, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, by John Perkins - http://www.tinyurl.com/4tebc or http://www.tinyurl.com/5t8j9 ) and NOW we can and must advance to an era of primarily reason-mediated conflict. In each of the earlier eras people by and large did the best they could with what they had (as they will today and in the future only now with much better tools for communication which MUST be used for increased understanding, which -- fortunately -- can naturally translate to caring). The problem of capitalism today was less a problem when it was invented as a solution to feudal imperialism (with regular physical conflict). Economic imperialism has yet further removed the suffering from view of the beneficiaries of economic imperialism; but, in order to link with economic subjects, a global network has been built that can actually be used to bring people together -- and while inter-tribal, international, and intercorporate engagements in ages of primarily physically-mediated and primarily economically-mediated conflict have a history of being quite exploitive (if not deadly), engagements in the dawning age of reason can evolve to be much more like a dance, yet still a dance of joy or survival depending on one's viewpoint. The key should be seeing the power of inclusion, which can bring joy and unity -- replacing profit maximization with fruition maximization as a necessity for sustainability/survival and joy in a globalizing era.

My passions have been channeled into writing about a systematic solution to this systemic problem of today: that corporations do both the most good and the most bad, but it is their ability to hide bad things in the complexity of corporate behavior and in the popular but treacherous myth they promulgate -- "greed is good" -- that has led to essentially all major world problems.

Efforts to overpower corporations with grass roots public fervor or death-of-their-excesses by a thousand cuts from non-profits or NGOs appear to be having little effect, so why not turn the tools of corporations (and their economic might) against their regressive practices? This is Aikido Activism, my passion that I hope will become yours in a budding movement that everyone should want to join - and that anyone and everyone with a computer and Internet access is empowered to advance by sharing parts of the puzzle (how Aikido Activism can be applied in their field and applying it), supporting other Aikido Activists, getting the word out electronically, etc.

Change is possible. Find out who some Aikido Activists are who are working for progressive transformation of outworn social traditions –and please share any comments, ideas, connections, at the new wiki-website http://aikidoactivism.xwiki.com/ where there is a growing amount of information begun to be collected and organized online to advance the Aikido Progressive Movement – to understand our past and build a promising opportunity for our future.

Greetings,

I just got a job in a university science & engineering library. I am charged with changing a pretty large display in our main room. Right now we have the physics of sports. I'm think a major shift of thinking for the new up and coming kids of the future.

I'd like to inspire them to think about environmental issues in such a way as to have them actually persue them. I'd like to put up a kick ass display of structural engineering with the green theme in mind, the use of recycled materials, thought behind choosing building sites that are more environmentally concious, that type of thing.

I'm wondering if any of you can direct me to any companies that might have education materials I can request. Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks for caring about our planet! Here in the sammamish basin, we're hoping to put online networking tools in the hands of folks who want to coordnate sustainable watershed activities and strategies (or just connect with their neighbors up and down stream). Anyone interested in the potential of a "social" networking online project that uses shared watersheds as an organizing theme, check out:

A Green Solution Now

I have decided to start my own tribe for people to come and learn to implement sustainable local protein food production methods. I named it Grow Your Own. I intend to use this tool to promote sustainable land based aquaculture as solution to corporate controlled food sources, as solution to strip mining our oceans, as solution to contaminated food, and as solution to environmental damage done by conventional protein production and harvesting. This tribe is being created to challenge as many consumers as I can to put your money where your mouth is, take control and make a change. "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach him to (grow) fish; he eats for a life time."

This method is adaptable for an individual, a community, a co-housing development, for soup kitchens, alongside community gardens and greenhouses etc. We have also found it to be economically sustaining.

The main goal here, of course, is to get ~ the ~ clean ~ fish ~ on ~ the ~ market. If it’s not made available than consumers have no option accept to stop eating fish period. And are they really going to do THAT? And how many need to make that choice to impact a change? And that's ~just ~fish. What it takes to impact water conservation, pollution, environmental damage, even wasted land raising cattle and pig and all the damage continuously done doing THAT protein food production. Gotta make available a better alternative.

We are located in Maine and have a fish farm ourselves. We believe strongly that anyone concerned with health, environment, sustainability, ecology, corporate control, local food production, and local economies and the communities effected, as well as water conservation and land conservation should take a real good look at this solution. I invite you to participate. Hello.

So is anyone on this tribe completly off the grid or operating a green lifestyle house. My only experience living off grid has been in a RV. Certainly a good experience but I committed a good part of my time maintaining the systemns. Water/Sewer/Electrical Not that I have a problem with that, but it was definetly a task to keep everything in optimum operating conditions. Even harder in the winter, cold weather sucks up alot of energy and is hard on equipment (and me). I'm looking for ppl with practical experience living off the systemn and not just websites or books talking about it.

The last day to take the old (LEED 2.0) exam is August 19. Is anyone here taking it, or have taken it? Any tips on taking the exam--I really can't afford the seminar.

Hi, I'm I'm working on a project-based 10 curriculm that will funtion as a doorway to ecologically integrated learning for high school students. The project is headed by Mike Flynn and we have been working with other members of common
vision(www.commonvision.org.)as well as with "Pomona College".

I am interested in eco-building and would like to base my curriculm on designing and creating an adobe (or Cobb) structure within the garden. There educational landscape is very dreery and drab. The garden is looking alive, (this program started last year) yet it needs some beatifying if we are really to develop the aesthetic sensitivity needed to
instill an enviromental ethic within the student.

If any of y'all know about how to go about getting information (interviews, books), materials, or any advice would be much apprieciated. (I am residing in Claremont, Ca right outside of LA.)

I think everyone in this tribe is busy with school, but in any case...
Job: RESEARCH ANALYST - The Brattle Group

The Brattle Group is an economic, environmental, and
trade
associations. Representative Brattle Group engagements
include litigation
support and expert testimony (e.g., in cases involving
antitrust concerns,
regulated industries, patent infringement, environmental
issues, tax
issues, or contract disputes); applied finance; market
research and development planning. For further information
about The
Brattle Group, please visit our web site at .

RAs participate on project teams with senior consulting
skills in
applied economics, finance, and accounting as well as an
an outstanding
record of placing RAs in quality graduate programs for
economics, business,
and law.

Qualified candidates may have a bachelor's degree in any of
several
disciplines but a strong quantitative background is
engineering discipline
related to the environmental field (e.g., environmental,
civil, or chemical
computers. Candidates must have a G.P.A. of 3.5 or better.

Please forward your application materials to
resumes@brattle.com. The
application materials should include a cover letter, resume,
